**Trance Poetics** is both a practice and a lens. It’s a discipline that examines poetry as a vehicle for the trance state and also urgently asks what becomes possible with the form when we deprioritize traditional meaning as the primary value that’s being written towards. Such poetics seek, instead, to access and emulate the trance state from alternate angles—often being motivated more so by image, sound, and feeling. Each of the three class meetings will correspond with one of these frameworks to explore the imagistic, sonic, and emotional fields of poetry.
The class will be a blend of generative games and activities, group discussions and meaning making and workshop style feedback-sharing. Writers in all genres are welcome, as long as you’re willing to try your hand at writing a few poems. This would be great for stagnated or thirsty practices as the aim is to lower the stakes to creation, approach writing from an experimental place, and open up new avenues of composition rather than just sitting down to write “about” something.
You should leave the class with a few new poems and a suite of techniques to keep the creative channel flowing.
