Want to work

with us?

three smiling people slangin' books

Buckman is fortunate that it is based in Portland. The city’s art and literature scene is expansive, the well of talent deep and continually replenishing. Buckman is spoiled with abundance, scouting broadens our horizons, and there’s great thrill and pride reporting back and printing our favorite finds to the world.

Buckman has been ramping up and we are releasing a new book every month for the next nine months! So, we could definitely use another dedicated person to help support our Portland-centric independent publishing mission. We believe everyone should get paid for their work, and that making books for living is probably the best job, though one that takes finesse, stamina, and good humor.

If you’ve been to our events, and/or read our books, you probably  have an idea of our vibe. Spending time with our publications is definitely recommended as you should have a grasp on the work we’ve published. Copies of all our publications can be purchased at most bookshops around town as well as in our book vending machine inside Honey Latte Cafe and Oregon Convention Center. Copies of Buckman Journal are in the reading library at both The Stacks Coffeehouse and Rose City Book Pub.

WHAT WE’re Looking FOR

Everything Buckman has done so far we’ve done with only four or five people total, which means we’re all pitching in on everything. Our ideal crew member is also a bit of a swiss army knife, skillwise. We don’t expect that every applicant will have all these skills but are including all the aspects of our operation where we could use support so please apply if you are skilled in some of the following areas.

  • Writing / Editorial - As a literary outfit, this is pretty foundational. Any background in writing is appreciated: from poets to grantwriters to copy editors. Reading contemporary literature is just as important. Someone with a keen eye could contribute with editing and proofreading as well as copy writing for the website, newsletters, and other Buckman materials.

  • Social Media - This is currently no one’s favorite thing. We’d love someone who has a healthy and productive relationship with Instagram (and maybe this “Booktok” we’ve been hearing about?) who is excited about creating, moderating, and streamlining digital “content.”

  • Scouting / Outreach - It’s crucial we stay on top of the many facets of the Portland literary and art scenes. We source much of our content from scouting around town and seeing what intrigues. So if you’re someone who loves going to open mics and art galleries, and reading the newest releases, you’d make a great scout. You could get paid to go to poetry readings!

  • Publicity - While we are a small and regionally-focused indie press, we want all of our books to have as deep and wide of an audience as possible, so the more we can forge and fortify channels to promote our titles, the better. Someone with a publicity background could help us maintain and make new contacts in the literary and art worlds and pitch in on spreading the word about new books both locally and worldwide. Our outreach also includes keeping relationships with many bookstores and doing our own local distribution and advertising about new titles. (Having a car or bike would be super helpful for this part, Buckman will reimburse gas mileage).

  • Events - We table at numerous book, art, and zine fairs throughout the year and also organize the annual summer Portland Indie Book & Art Fair. The new crew member should routinely be available weekends and evenings to help vend at these fairs and be a part of Buckman readings, exhibitions, and book launch events.

  • Design - This is not the main thing we are looking for but it’s always helpful to have someone who can pitch in with book design, making digital and print promotional materials, and giving input on the look of books.

Broadly, and importantly, the right fit will be: genuinely eager to learn, excited about community, open to collaboration, not a square.

Job Details

The position has a starting wage of $25.00/hour (pay raises after a year) with a flexible schedule ranging between 15-30 hours per week (depending on skills and availability). Paid personal time off and sick pay is offered.

You don’t necessarily have to have worked in publishing to be the right fit, but should have some experience with aspects of what the job entails, however you interpret that.

Questions

  • Not a plain bullet-pointed .pdf. If you're a writer, write a narrative resume, if you're an artist, paint your self-portrait as perfect employee, etc. We'll talk more about qualifications, goals, and such during the interview, for this first step, we just want to get an artful first impression.

  • All good. We are flexible and can flex even more for the right person.

  • We have a workspace in inner SE, fondly called The Buckman Mothership, inside the ADA-Accessible Honey Latte Cafe building. We all make our own schedules but are typically here Mondays through Thursdays (loosely during business hours). We like to have at least one day a week all of Team Buck are in the Mothership, to meet. Since we're all about Portland, we're not considering out-of-town and/or remote workers at this time.
